“Your Google Busines Profile is curb appeal. Make it unmistakable who you are, what you serve, and how to book—right now.” — David Holman, Founder, Local Restaurant SEO
Step 1

Claim & Verify Your Google Business Profile

Search your restaurant name on Google. If you see “Own this business?”, claim it. Complete verification (SMS, email, video, or postcard). Add the owner and a backup manager so you’re never locked out.

Benefit: Verification unlocks menus, reservations, food ordering, posts, Q&A, and analytics—everything that drives revenue.
Tracking tip: Add ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp to your Website link so GA4 shows orders & reservations from GBP traffic.
Step 2

Dial In Categories, Attributes & Hours

  • Primary category: exact match (e.g., “Fast food restaurant”, “Brunch restaurant”, “Restaurant”).
  • Additional categories: Hot pot restaurant, Vegan, Barbecue restaurant, etc., to reflect your menu.
  • Attributes: Outdoor seating, Live music, Late-night food, Takes reservations, Delivery, Takeout, Wheelchair accessible, Black-owned/Women-owned, dietary options.
  • Hours + More hours: Add Brunch, Delivery, Pickup, Happy hour. Keep holiday hours current to avoid “Closed” warnings.
Primary category

Attributes
Outdoor seating Live music Accessible
More hours
Happy hour Delivery Pickup
Benefit: Better matching for filtered searches like “open now,” “outdoor seating,” or “late night” = more clicks.
“Category is your compass. Pick the right one and Google sends you the right diners.” — David Holman
Step 3

Menus, Reservations & Online Ordering (Tie to Revenue)

  • Menu: Upload your menu inside GBP. Use dish names guests actually search (e.g., “Hot honey wings”).
  • Reservations: Connect a supported partner (Resy, SevenRooms, Toast Tables, OpenTable where available) so guests book without leaving Google.
  • Food ordering: Add providers and set your preferred link (put your direct/commission-friendly option first).

Shortcut: Add rich menu data to your site with the Menu Schema Generator.
Step 4

Photos & Short Video That Drive Clicks

  • Upload 10–20 photos now, then 3–5 weekly: hero dishes, interior/exterior, bar, team, patio, private dining.
  • Add 1–3 short vertical clips (15–30s): chef plating, cocktail pour, dining room vibe.
  • Use natural light, minimal filters, tight cropping.

Benefit: Profiles with quality photos earn more direction requests and website clicks—visuals win attention and conversions.
Step 5

Posts, Offers & the “What’s Happening” Module

Publish a weekly Post for specials, events, or seasonal menus. In 2025, Google rolled out “What’s Happening” for restaurants and bars, which helps surface timely updates (e.g., Today’s special, Live music Saturday) prominently in your profile.

Post title
DJ Brunch — Sat 11–3
Details
Bottomless mimosas + chicken & waffles. Book fast—last week sold out.

“Fresh posts feed the profile. If you show what’s happening this week, you win this week’s diners.” — David Holman
Step 6

Google Business Profile: Reviews & Reputation

  • Ask smart: add a review QR to checks/host stand with your short Google review link.
  • Prime specifics: “If you loved the hot honey wings or our Sunday brunch, a quick Google review helps a ton!”
  • Reply fast (24–48h): Thank them and reinforce dish/neighborhood keywords.
  • Handle negatives: Apologize once, fix it, invite back with a make-good.
Review SMS: “Thanks for dining with us! If you loved the [dish], could you leave a quick Google review? It helps: [short link] 🙏”
Step 7

Q&A (GBP Chat Was Retired in 2024)

Google ended in-profile chat in 2024. Use the public Q&A instead—and seed the most helpful questions from your owner account, then answer them clearly.

  • Seed Q&A: Post and answer FAQs yourself to prevent wrong info (hours, patio policy, dietary labels, parking, kid-friendly).
  • Encourage calls & reservations: Make “Reserve” and “Call” easy across your profile and website.
Q&A
Q: Same-day reservations?
A: Yes—tap “Reserve” to see live times.

Q: Dog-friendly patio?
A: Yes, patio is first-come on weekends.
“Control the conversation. If you don’t answer the common questions, the internet will.” — David Holman
Step 8

Measure ROI from GBP Traffic

  • GBP Performance: track views, searches, calls, website clicks, bookings, menu views, and direction requests.
  • GA4 + UTMs: add UTMs to your Website and Post buttons so revenue ties back to GBP.
  • Simple model: (direct orders + reservations from GBP) − cost, divided by cost = ROI.
GBP actions
Website: 1,248 • Calls: 327 • Reservations: 214
GA4 revenue
Direct orders: $12,430 • Reservations value: $8,560
Step 9

Advanced Enhancements

  • Preferred order link: keep your direct ordering above third-party apps (protect margin).
  • Menu schema on your site: use the Menu Schema Generator for rich menu signals.
  • Reserve with Google: enable instant bookings in Search/Maps via your reservation platform (Resy, SevenRooms, Toast Tables, OpenTable where supported).
  • Owner-seeded Q&A: faster answers, fewer phone calls.
  • AI readiness: clear hours, labeled menus, and plain-language FAQs. Quick audit: AI Readiness Check.
Step 10

Monthly Maintenance Playbook (45 Minutes)

  • Week 1: Add 5–10 photos + 1 short video; update “What’s Happening”; reply to reviews.
  • Week 2: Publish a Post with a timely promo (UTM on the button); refresh Q&A.
  • Week 3: Check Performance & GA4; swap any outdated menu items or hours.
  • Week 4: Confirm preferred order link; plan next month’s photo/video shoot.
